Features of AM

Many AM users analyze data sets from the National Center from Education Statistics (NCES). NCES helped fund some of the development of AM, and often uses AM when it teaches researchers about its data sets. About half of the technical support questions that we get through the AM website are really questions about NCES data sets rather than our software. We are pleased to be able to help with these issues also.

If you have a question about a particular data set, such as how a particular variable was defined, which variables should be used for weights, or how to describe the sample in you paper, please select the appropriate page below.

If you have questions about how to use the AM software, or have encountered a bug or problem with the software, please visit the AM Support Page.

The American Institutes for Research runs the Educational Statistical Services Institute (ESSI), which was created to meet the operational and research needs of NCES. With support from NCES, knowledgable AIR and ESSI staff will try to answer your questions about supported NCES data sets (if you'd like us to support other data sets, let us know at We make our best efforts to research your questions and answer accurately. It remains your responsibility to verify this information. AIR assumes no liability for information provided through this service. We also note that these answers come from AIR, not NCES. Each AM web page devoted to a particular survey provides links to the appropriate NCES program area web pages.
